Winter accessories for protecting toddlers from cold

25th Nov 2019

Choosing the right winter accessory for your toddler along with the winter clothing is very important, since little bodies have a harder time regulating temperature than bigger ones. In fact, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the younger the child, the smaller the ratio of his/her body mass to body surface — which means more heat escapes through his/her skin. Let’s take a look at some of the winter accessories that are essential in keeping your little one warm and comfortable throughout the season.

  1. Stroller Shield : It’s basically a thick piece of plastic or other fabric that wraps over the stroller to keep out rain, snow and wind. Often the shield comes with the stroller and seals around it by velcros or other fasteners.

  2. Stroller Blanket : Parents who spend more time walking than driving will probably want to spend on a stroller blanket or footmuff for the stroller. These sleeping-bag-like blankets zip around a toddler's feet and sometimes over their heads with a hood to protect from the cold.

  3. Winter Hat : Toddlers will give their parents a hard time when it comes to keeping their winter hats on head. Winter hats that stay put by means of a chin strap are the best option when it comes to winter hats for toddlers. Wider straps even cover the ears and neck which is even better during the winters.

  4. Fleece sleepsacks : Toddlers who kick off their blankets can’t be kept warm with loose blankets. Sleepsacks can be really useful in this case. These are bag-like garments or covering worn by infants for sleeping in. Infant sleepsacks differ from regular sleeping bags in design and purpose, being designed primarily for indoor rather than outdoor use, and usually featuring either arm holes or sleeves. Fleece sleepsacks particularly keep babies and toddlers cosy in their cribs.

  5. Mittens : Mittens do not have separate finger openings or sheaths, but they also come with the variety that still separates the thumb from the other four fingers. They have a higher thermal efficiency than gloves as they have a smaller surface area exposed to the cold. Mittens are ideal for keeping toddlers’ hands warm and cosy during the winters.

  6. Booties : These are short soft sock or boot-like garment used for warmth or protection. Booties for babies are usually thick and knitted, to keep the baby's feet warm. The fleece ones are great for winter and cotton for spring or even cool summer nights.
